NATIONAL DIPLOMA FOR DENTAL NURSES
This is one of the qualifications which is approved by the GeneralDental Council (GDC) for statutory registration which has been
mandatory for all dental nurses since 31st July 2008.

5. Oral Disease and Pathology
6. Patient Care and Management
7. Assessing Patients Oral Health Needs And Treatment Planning
8. Oral Health Promotion and Preventative Dentistry
9. Restorative Dentistry
10. Oral Surgery
11. Orthodontic Procedures
12. Dental Drugs, Materials, Instruments And Equipment
13. Pain and Anxiety Control
14. Radiography
15. Communication
The syllabus of this course follows the guidelines provided by the National
Examination Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN).
Course Structure
During the course students are required to complete a Record ofExperience to demonstrate their competence during various dental
procedures. This is carried out in the students’ workplace under the
supervision and guidance of the dentist. Students will also be set
homework assignments and give mock exams to prepare them for
the end of course exam.
Record of Experience
5 Units consisting of a number of Practical Experience RecordSheets (PERS) and supplementary outcomes which are a variety of
related tasks to complete i.e. label diagrams, answer questions etc
Once complete the Record of Experience tracking sheet is submitted
to the NEBDN together with the examination application form.
Examinations take place twice a year on the 3rd Saturday of May and
November. The Record of Experience should be submitted by the 1st March for
the May exam and 1st October for the November exam.
Examination Structure
The examination consists of 2 sections which are:1. Written Paper - which takes place in November or May
2. Practical Exam - up to 15 Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE))
which takes place 6—8 weeks later (if student passes written exam)
We will provide:
- Lessons to provide theoretical knowledge
- Professional instruction from a qualified teacher for 12 months
- Access to interviews for Dental Nurse positions
- Revision sessions to assist with examinations
The Centre can arrange interviews to gain Dental Nurse positions but does not
guarantee employment
Application Process
- Complete an application form
- Candidates will be shortlisted for interview.
Interviews will consist of:
- Completion of a short literacy and numeracy test
- Interview with Head and Class tutors
Course Fees
- Course Fee - to be paid on first day of course – information provided at interview
- Record of Experience Fee – provided at interview
- Exam fee – provided at interview
