CERTIFICATE IN ORAL HEALTH EDUCATION
This is a post qualification course suitable for Qualified Dental
Nurses who are required to provide patients with Oral Health
Education, under the direction of a dentist.

4. Dental Structures, Physiology and Anatomy
5. Oral Disease and Prevention
6. Society and Oral Health
The syllabus of this course follows the guidelines provided by
the National Examination Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN).
Course Structure
During the course students are required to complete a Record
of Experience to demonstrate that they are competent in
giving Oral Health Education to a variety of patient groups.
This is usually carried out in the student’s workplace under the
supervision of the dentist.
Record of Experience
Part A: Log sheets
Students are required to produce Log sheets recording the
details of the Oral Health Sessions they provide to patients.
Part B: Expanded Case Study
Students must complete 2 case studies from the Log sheets
• One for a child
• One for an adult
Part C: Display/Exhibition
Students must plan, produce and evaluate a display or
exhibition in their workplace
Once completed the Record of Experience is sent to the
NEBDN for moderation.
Examination Structure
A students knowledge and understanding of the course
material is assessed through an examination carried out in a
local dental hospital and is held on the third Saturday of
March and September.
The examination consists of a written paper and an oral
examination
Part A
- Section 1 – 30 multiple choice questions
- Section 2 – short answer questions
Part B
3 Compulsary structured short answer questions
Oral
This part of the examination lasts 15 minutes. Students are
required to give a 5 minute presentation on one of the two
case studies (chosen by the NEBDN) from the Record of
Experience. The remainder of the time is used for questions
relating to general oral health topics.

Professional instruction from a qualified teacher for 12 months
Revision sessions prior to examination
Registration requirements
- GCSE English and Mathematics Grade C or above
- Must have a recognised Dental Nurse qualification
- Must be registered with the General Dental Council (GDC)
- Must have access to a variety of different patient groups

Students will be shortlisted for interview where they will
undergo a short test to show current dental nursing
knowledge.
