CERTIFICATE IN DENTAL RADIOGRAPHY
This is a post qualification course suitable for Qualified Dental
Nurses who are required to take x-rays of patients under the
direction of a dentist.
Under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations
2000 (IR(ME)R2000) all personnel directly involved in taking
x-rays of patients must be qualified to do so, and should be
trained to the highest possible radiation dose to patients and
staff while producing radiographs of the optimum diagnostic
quality.
The Syllabus
This follows the guidelines provided by the National Examining
Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) and covers the following:

Course Structure
Practical Training
This is carried out in the dental practice under the supervision
of a dentist or in Dental Radiography Departments in Dental
Hospitals or Radiography Education Centres.
Theoretical Training
This must be undertaken by attendance on an NEBDN
accredited course.
Record of Experience
PART A : Log sheets detailing supervised taking of the
following radiographs.
- 20 paralleling technique Periapical radiographs
- 10 Panoramic radiographs
- 10 Bitewings
- 10 other radiographs which include a minimum of 2 Occlusals, 2 Lateral Cephalographs and 2 bisecting angle Periapical radiographs.
PART B: Expanded Case Studies
Three case studies of 1000 words each relating to the taking of:
- A Dental Panoramic
- A Bitewing
- A Paralleling Technique Periapical Radiograph
PART C: Appendices
Written exercise in the taking and processing of Oblique
Lateral Radiographs.
Exam Structure
The examination takes place on the first Saturday of June and
December each year at Centres in selected major towns and
cities around the UK.
This consists of a one hour multiple choice question paper.
We will provide:
Professional instruction from a qualified teacher for 6 months
which will include revision sessions prior to the examination.
This course is suitable for:
- Those wishing to improve their career with a post qualification
- Those wishing to progress to Hygiene/Therapy courses
- Those wishing to be legally able to take radiographs in their work place
Registration Requirements:
Students must
- Have a recognised dental nursing qualification
- Be registered with GDC
- Have access to patients requiring the taking of x-rays
- Have consent and support for their dentist
